Attorney General Brenna Bird Announces Victory in General Motors Lawsuit

DES MOINES—Attorney General Brenna Bird announced a win for the state of Iowa in the consumer protection lawsuit filed against General Motors (GM) in February of 2026. GM and the state have reached an agreement where GM will pay $7 million dollars and change their business practices of illegally tracking Iowans without their consent or knowledge.

Iowa’s lawsuit accused GM and OnStar of both illegally collecting and selling data from Iowans. The lawsuit, filed in Polk County District Court, asserted that General Motors engaged in deceptive business practices in violation of the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

Iowa alleged that, since 2015, GM installed systems in its cars and trucks that tracked speed, seatbelt usage, driving habits, and location. GM then sold that data to third-party data brokers, who later sold it to insurance companies. The insurance companies used that data to raise rates, deny coverage, or cancel policies. That was all without Iowans knowing.

In the term sheet, reached on Friday, October 30th, GM commits to changing their behaviors and will pay the state of Iowa $7 million dollars. The settlement terms in the term sheet will be finalized in an agreement later

“GM should never have been secretly collecting Iowans data, and it should never have sold that data for profit,” said Attorney General Bird. “This agreement is a victory for Iowans and a warning to companies that your deceptive practices are illegal under Iowa law and will not be tolerated.”
