Thailand's Auto Output Climbs 2.69 Percent in March

(MENAFN) Thailand's automotive sector posted a third consecutive month of production growth in March, propelled by robust export demand for passenger cars and pickup trucks, fresh data released Monday by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) revealed.

Manufacturers rolled out 133,413 vehicles off Thai assembly lines last month, marking a 2.69 percent year-on-year increase, the FTI figures showed.

FTI Automotive Industry Club spokesperson Surapong Paisitpattanapong attributed the upswing chiefly to accelerating output of trucks and hybrid electric vehicles, even as production of conventional combustion-engine passenger cars registered a measurable decline.

The momentum carried through the entire first quarter of 2026, with total output climbing 5.32 percent over the same period a year ago to reach 369,751 units — a surge driven largely by the rapid expansion of battery electric vehicle manufacturing, Surapong told reporters at a news conference Monday.

On the domestic front, sales delivered a sharp upside surprise, jumping 7.29 percent year-on-year to 59,865 units in March. Surapong linked the spike directly to record-setting order bookings at the Bangkok International Motor Show, where pure electric vehicles commanded more than half of all reservations — a milestone underscoring the accelerating shift in Thai consumer preferences.

Export performance, however, offered a more mixed picture. Finished vehicle shipments dipped 0.64 percent from the prior year to 80,394 units in March, as turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz throttled deliveries to Middle Eastern markets by a steep 15.96 percent, Surapong noted.
